SURF CITY, NC (WECT) - An overnight fire destroyed half of a hotel in Surf City, one home, damaged another, and sent at least one person to the hospital.
According to Surf City Fire Chief Mike Halstead, crews arrived at a fire at Tiffany's motel in Surf City at 3:15 a.m. At least 10 different fire crews are on the scene to help. The fire started in the second half of Tiffany's Motel burning 11 rooms and the main office.
Two men were staying in the room that caught on fire, but only of them was inside the room when the fire sparked. The other man was able to help his friend escape, but the man who was in the room when the fire started was taken to the hospital with burn injuries to his arms and hands. The man has since been released.
When the fire was contained, SBI dogs were used to sniff out fire accelerant. A full investigation will begin when hot spots are cooled and all electricity is turned off to ensure safety for the fire officials.
The fire chief said it could take days before the cause of the fire is determined.
In addition to the motel, the fire created a domino effect causing the house next door to burn and is a total loss and the house next to that was 25% destroyed.
According to the Tiffany's Motel Facebook page, part of the motel is still open for business. The post reads:
"Sorry to report that the old side of the motel burned down last night. For those of you that love Tiffany's - don't worry, the remainder of the motel is still open for business. We will be setting up a new office today across the street on the 1st level near the elevator."
Officials say the motel is one of about half a dozen in Surf City, and it has been around for a while. Residents say it's a sort of historical landmark, and they were sad to hear part of it had burned.
