TOPSAIL BEACH, NC - (WECT) - Traffic was stop and go on Topsail Island Wednesday for an unusual reason, to move a house.
"It's pretty rare to have a house moved," said Town Manager, Tim Holloman. He says it happens about once a year.
On Wednesday a house, complete with a porch, flower pot, and ceiling fans, moved down the street, from Topsail Beach all the way to Surf City.
"To watch this great big huge thing lumbering by, is something that you never see move, or you hope you never see move is unusual," said resident, Jay Hanig. Instead of tearing the home down, the owners handed it over to house mover Greg Murphy. He's been in the business for almost two decades, and drove it to a plot of land in Surf City, where it will sit until he can sell it.
Murphy says he's glad to know he's helping to save old homes from being demolished. "A lot of people out there need homes, this is a good house and we want to try to save it," said Murphy. The process is slow going. Crews first had to lower the house, making sure it would fit under power lines.
Then they had to stop every so often to move a sign or mailbox that got in the way. With only one road going from Topsial Beach to Surf City, there was no way to get around the wide load while it was moving.
Some said the traffic back up was frustrating, others said they didn't mind the wait.
Holloman says homes aren't allowed to be moved over the summer, to prevent back-ups.
