Columbus Co. deputies using Facebook to find deadbeat parents

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Deputies in Columbus County are using social media to track down deadbeat dads and moms.
They recently launched the Facebook page Columbus County Dead Beat Parents. Sgt. Dawn Battle who's the administrator over the page said it targets parents wanted by deputies for not paying child support.
"It's a different avenue of getting the word out on these pages," said Battle. "Child support order arrests are public record. I want to do everything we can in Columbus County to try and get these folks to come in and uphold their child support obligations."
She goes to the alleged dead beat parent's Facebook page, share their photos along with a link to their profile and that information shows up on Columbus County Dead Beat Parents. Deputies hope anyone who knows the location of those people will call the sheriff's office.
"I'm not going to link to a page if I'm not 100% certain it is that person. We actually had one of the folks served this weekend who was on the site. I haven't talked with officer to see if information came from Facebook or not. But she's been difficult to find and is historically difficult to find. But we got it served," said Sgt. Battle.
Currently, there are more than 60 people featured on the page. Battle says, some child support court dates are coming up and she will be adding more pictures to the site.
Deputies tell us, since the Facebook page was created they've had parents and other family members reach out to them about reopening child support cases and how to get financial help.
