WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Utility officials in Wilmington say there was no environmental impact from a sewer overflow Sunday morning, according to test results.
Officials with the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority say a sewer overflow occurred early Sunday morning at the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant and dumped 66,000 gallons of sludge into the Cape Fear River.
The staff at the Southside plant were able to take control of the situation by sandbagging the area and pumping the overflow back into the system. They also cleaned the area and put down hydrated lime on the overflow.
The Division of Water Quality will investigate the cause of the sewer spill.
