NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - In New Hanover County, the sight of closing stores is all too familiar. You can see empty store windows all around Wilmington. However, one area business is expanding.
The Wedding Dress Shoppe celebrated its Grand Opening this weekend. Owner Alan Perry, of Perry's Emporium, says it took him three years to decide to take on the new business venture.
He says when the economy and businesses started to fail in 2007, he decided to invest a lot of his resources in the one thing he says seemed to be doing ok, the bridal industry.
The store front across the street from Perry's Emporium had been empty for about five years and finally this fall Perry said he decided to go for it, and purchase the space for his Wedding Dress Shop. He believes the proximity will help both businesses succeed.
"I'm thinking if every guy got a coupon to give his bride-to-be 20 percent off on a wedding dress, then surely they would come look," said Perry. "If I have what she needs in the service, variety, and price we ought to be able to sell at least half of them, that would be 200 wedding dresses a year, I could make money doing that."
He is also moving forward along with technology changes. Above each dressing room there is a TV so customers can show relatives their potential dresses over skype.
