HAMPSTEAD, NC (WECT) – High School wrestling is a predominantly male sport. But Topsail's Catherine Herring is changing that. In just her second year on the mat she has earned the Pirates starting job at 106 pounds.
Catherine's wrestling career didn't start that well. Her decision to wrestle came with mixed reviews from home. "My mom was excited about it. She was like ah so cool go wrestle. But my dad who had wrestled was like oh I don't want my daughter to get hurt."
In just a sort amount of time Catherine has excelled at the sport. And hopes someday to make history, she wants to become just the second female to qualify for the NCHSAA State Championships. In the State of North Carolina no females has won a State Title. "Next year I feel like I will be able to do it. There are still holes in my wrestling, just simple defenses that I haven't got down yet.
While she might not be as strong as many of the boys she faces, what she lacks in strength she makes up in skill. "You know anyone who has the guts to step out here wrestle is treated like an equal. She has been crossed faced and slammed just like everyone else. And she has had to pull herself off the mat just like everyone else. She is never treated different" said teammate Taylor Webster.
To qualify to the State Championships Catherine must finish in the top four at the Regional's.
