Luck changes for 86-year-old discrimination victim

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The victim of a reported discrimination case is getting some special treatment, following our report highlighting what happened to her at a Wilmington nail salon.

The family of a woman from Wilmington says that she was the victim of discrimination after Lee Nail Salon reportedly tried to charge the 86-year-old an extra fee because she is in a wheelchair.

On Friday, Ilse Rosenberg was given a complete makeover for free, courtesy of Bangz Nail Salon in Wilmington.

This was the first of three free makeovers that Ilse has scheduled over the next two weeks.

Her caregiver, Melissa Padgett says this is a good first step in the recovery process, but they still plan to fight for justice.  "It doesn't make up for it fully, but it does help her emotionally," said Padgett.  "She definitely feels appreciated and we are looking forward to hearing from the justice department next month."

The family also complained to the North Carolina Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division.

A representative from that office said they have forwarded the family's complaint to the US Department of Justice, which handles investigations into ADA violations.
