UNCW Press Release
NEWARK, Delaware – Senior Elena Delle Donne poured in a game-high 26 points to lead Delaware to a 67-39 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball action Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The Blue Hens improved to 14-3 overall and remained undefeated in league play at 5-0 as they won their ninth straight contest. The Seahawks, meanwhile, slipped to 2-14 and 1-4 CAA as they lost their third straight contest.
The CAA Preseason Player-of-the-Year, Delle Donne was 11-of-15 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, to spark the Delaware attack. Seniors Lauren Carra and Danielle Parker joined Delle Donne in double figures as they finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Delle Donne and Parker finished with eight rebounds apiece as Delaware enjoyed a 46-30 edge on the glass.
Senior Karneshia Garrett tallied 14 points and sophomore Kelva Atkins added 11 for UNCW. Freshman Dana Brown pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while senior Tawanna Lee dished out a team-best four assists.
Delaware never trailed in the contest, using a three-pointer from Miller at the 11:52 mark to spark a 12-2 run that spanned four and a half minutes and stretched the Blue Hens 11-9 edge into a 23-11 cushion.
A layup by Garrett with 5:01 on the clock ended the run and sparked a 7-2 spurt that pulled the Seahawks with seven, 25-18.
The Blue Hens took control of the contest moments later, however, closing the first half with nine unanswered points to take a 34-18 advantage into the break before tallying 11 of the first 12 points of the second half to build a 45-19 edge with 16:00 remaining.
UNCW would stem the Delaware spurt momentarily, scoring seven of nine points to make it a 47-26 contest, but that would be as close as the Seahawks would get as the Blue Hens maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way.
A jumper by freshman Alecia Bell with one minute remaining capped an 8-3 Blue Hens stretch and determined the final 28-point margin.
Both teams return to action Sunday with league contests. UNCW is at Towson for a Noon start while Delaware travels to Drexel for a 2 p.m. contest.
