WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The future of the Water Street parking deck is still unclear, but Wilmington Downtown Inc. is already drawing up plans for what they want to see in that location.
John Hinnant showed us their ideas.
The plans includes a centrally located green space along Water Street between Chestnut and Market Streets.
Plus, their plan would allow room for additional residential and commercial development downtown.
The City of Wilmington recently purchased the second half of the Water Street parking deck. Mayor Bill Saffo indicated that the City would be interested in renovating that space into a park.
Hinnant says the renovation would broaden the tax base downtown and attract more tourists to the area but he thinks the city needs to act quickly. "It's going to take a lot of time so we need to have plans now," said Hinnant. "The better the plan, the better the outcome. So we should be planning now."
The City of Wilmington wants to gather additional public input before making any decisions regarding the future of the parking deck.
