PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Two people were killed Monday afternoon in an accident involving a log truck on Highway 421 near Watha, according to authorities.
According to the State Highway Patrol, Debra Potter, 62, from Salemburg and Juanita Potter, 74, from Clinton were both killed in the crash.
Authorities say the driver, Debra, swerved over the center line and hit a log truck head-on near Shiloh Baptist Church.
The log truck driver, 42-year-old Jeremiah Lee, was transported to Burgaw Hospital with minor injuries.
Debra's husband, 56-year-old Donald Ray Potter, who was a passenger in the car she was driving, was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, but he is expected to be OK.
The log truck overturned in the accident. Part of Highway 421 remains closed, but officials are letting traffic go on in one direction at a time.
Jesse Fennell, who lives close by, didn't see the accident, but he heard it, "at first it sounded like a truck tire had exploded, but it was even louder than that," said Fennell.
Traffic slowed to a crawl for hours along the busy highway and Fennell said it was a scene he'd never forget.
