WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Several organizations have come together to coordinate a Martin Luther King Day of Service Event at the LINC Farm on Division Drive in Wilmington.
Volunteers spent the day clearing space for spring planting in the future urban garden, continuing the work Cape Fear Crop Mob began earlier this year. Farm manager Scott Jordan said there's already something growing in the land that used to be the backyard for a jail.
"We produce a spirit," he said. "We produce a community awareness."
Jordan said he hopes to continue the awareness with more service days to keep the farm thriving, especially for the nearby parts of Wilmington that are designated a food desert by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
LINC, FoodCorps, Feast Down East, VISTA and the Corporation for Public and Community Service worked together to make this day of service event possible.
