NWS: Powerful microburst blamed for damaging homes

CHADBOURNE NC (WECT) – A microburst (powerful straight line winds) caused ten homes to be damaged and numerous trees to snap according to preliminary reports from storm teams with the National Weather Service in Chadbourn Friday morning. 

A team was dispatched to investigate the damaged caused by a powerful thunderstorm that rolled through at about 6:45 p.m. Thursday.

The damage along Joe Brown Road and Best Road showed signs of non-rotating wind speeds of around 75mph. 

Light to moderate damage was spotted on prefabricated buildings including a roof torn away from one home.  A front porch was also ripped off of one structure.

The same storm also produced 70 mph winds near McMillian Rd a short distance away.
