WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WECT) - A staple in the Wrightsville Beach community is getting a big-time facelift.
Construction began this week on the Crystal Pier at the Oceanic Restaurant.
The railings on the middle portion of the pier have already been removed.
Crews are working to add more than 100 square feet of extra space, which will allow the restaurant to seat 30 tables more than usual.
The renovation plan also includes an extra 30 feet of "walk space" away from the tables for people to enjoy the ocean or do some fishing without disturbing the people who are eating.
Oceanic officials hope the construction will be completed by April, but in the meantime, the restaurant will remain open during construction.
Oceanic General Manager Adele McMurtrey said this pier construction will be great for business and the community.
"The crystal pier has been in this community for years," said McMurtrey. "We have customers come in and tell us all the time about how they used to come out here as children and play on the pier, and on the business side, this construction will allow us to serve much more of our community."
If you want to follow the construction process, the Oceanic will post pictures and updates to its Facebook fan page.
