WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Making a difference in the classroom and reaching students who are having a hard time are some of the struggles many teachers face, especially when it comes to teaching reading.
That's why hundreds of teachers are gathering at the Wilmington Convention Center downtown Thursday and Friday. The theme of the convention, drawing in educators from around the region, is 'reading by the river.'
It's two days dedicated to showing teachers strategic ways to reach at risk elementary students.
"At risk," in this scenario means students who are falling behind in reading in the first grade - a year teachers say is very important in development.
The conference registration Friday is at 7 a.m. and a fee is attached for attendees.
Also, there are plenty of new and classic books for sale to help teachers stock their classrooms with new material.
