BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Authorities have charged a retired highway patrol officer in connection to a father/son shooting that took place on Christmas Eve, according to a news release from District Attorney Jon David.

Following an investigation by the SBI and the Bladen County Sheriff's Office, Herbert Paul Weissinger, of Elizabethtown, was charged with two separate counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, which is a felony.

He is accused of shooting Thomas Daughety, Jr., 42, in the stomach, and his father, 64, in the hand.

The Bladen County Sheriff's Office said the two men were shot after a dispute over possible trespassing near Beards Chapel Loop Road.

The case will likely go before a grand jury next month.

Weissinger joined the Patrol in 1980 and retired at the rank of lieutenant in 2007, according to NC State Highway Patrol.
