WPD offers to designate 4 officers to NHC schools

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Police Department will designate four of its officers to help beef up patrol in area schools.

The New Hanover County School system is looking for more officers, but budget restrictions have made it difficult. This decision comes weeks after the fatal shootings at Sandy Hook in Newtown, Connecticut.

Police Chief Ralph Evangelous is willing to help out New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon, but Wilmington City Council has to approve his offer.

"The sheriff is kind enough to help us with downtown issues, so we're going to make these four positions available to him to help him with his security issues," explained Evangelous.

This agreement would last until the end of this year. City council said the sheriff's office will have to find a better long-term solution on its own.
