NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Officials in New Hanover County and Wilmington are reviewing what worked and didn't work during a gas leak that happened near Cape Fear Academy in December.
City officials say they were only involved in the incident to help with traffic issues. The leak itself was in the county's jurisdiction.
The biggest issue leaders identified was communication between responders and the community. City council says there is always room for improvement in the system.
"There's a lot of coordination and different people have different messages they want to get out," said council member Margaret Haynes. "The schools are responding to parents with children in the schools. The police and fire are responding to the neighbors around so there are really different messages."
The reverse 911 system was not used because county fire crews did not give the okay to do so. The city said it has the option to tap into the system, but didn't feel it was their duty at that time to make the call.
