Richard Willis (Source: Facebook)St. George police are investigating after a firefighter was killed when his pickup was struck by a train on Sunday.
Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet identified the victim as 27-year-old Richard Willis, of St. George.
South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers and St. George Police Department officers were called out to NW Railroad Avenue, near Ann Street, around 5 p.m. after receiving reports of a collision.
According to Police Chief Britt, Willis was trying to cross the tracks before the train arrived. He also said the truck was dragged about 100 yards
There are no lights or mechanical arms at the crossing, but there are several signs.
Britt said Willis was a firefighter with the Grover Rural Volunteer Fire Department.
The train consisted of just a locomotive and a caboose, according to Britt.
