Driver killed in 18 wheeler accident carrying hundreds of turkeys

DUPLIN, NC (WECT) - According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the driver of an 18-wheeler carrying turkeys died at the scene.

The incident occurred on Friday near Mount Olive in Duplin County. Jimmy Smith, 43, was speeding while driving east on Garner Chapel Road. The truck went off the right side of the road and overturned.

Officials said the truck was carrying close to 1,000 turkeys, half of which died in the wreck. The truck was supposedly heading to Butterball when the accident happened.
