NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The SBI has launched an investigation into a special deputy with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
A spokeswoman with the SBI says that Hovie Pope is the center of an investigation by the state's detectives, allegedly in connection to financial crimes.
Pope is best known for his time serving local communities in law enforcement.
He reportedly started his career with the Wilmington Police Department before joining the Wrightsville Beach Police Department, where he served for years before retiring.
During his time with the WBPD, he served as a patrolman from 1981-1982, a master patrolman from 1982-1987, an investigator from 1987-1994, a detective sergeant from 1994-2001 and a lieutenant from 2001-2004.
After retiring, he picked up his current part-time position with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.
A spokesperson says he is employed with the sheriff's office, but is not actively serving at this time, due to retirement benefit guidelines.
Additionally, Pope served as treasurer for the North Carolina Internal Affairs Investigators Association.
The president of that group said that he had no comment on Pope, though he did confirm that Pope served as treasurer at some point.
