New 'Miss Wilmington' will be crowned Saturday night

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – As the new year begins, so does the reign of a new "Miss Wilmington", who will be selected in the Wilmington Scholarship Pageant.

While it will be a special time for the young lady who will be selected to represent our area at various festivals and special occasions, it means the young woman  who has held the title for the past year has to give up the crown.

Alexis Gonzalez was crowned Miss Greater Wilmington 2012 last January, and told WECT's Bob Townsend the highlight of the past year has been the opportunity to meet some many new people.

"It has certainly been an honor representing the greater Wilmington area," said Alexis Gonzalez, Miss Greater Wilmington 2012.  "It opened the doors for me to tell people about the wonderful parts of Southeastern North Carolina, and I hope the new Miss Wilmington will have the same experiences as I was given."

Gonzalez is seeking a career in law and she will resume her classes in Charlotte next week.

Miss Wilmington represents New Hanover, Brunswick, Duplin, Pender and Onslow Counties.  And the pageant is the official preliminary pageant of the Miss America Program, with the winner going to compete in the Miss North Carolina Pageant later this year.

The Miss America organization is the largest scholarship provider for women in the world, and provides an opportunity for young women to build self-confidence, cultivate the skills needed to be successful in a 21st century world, and serve the communities in a positive manner.

Also scheduled for Saturday afternoon will be the Outstanding Little Miss Pageant.   Contestants range from ages 3-13.  That competition will be held at 1:00 p.m.

Both the Miss Wilmington Pageant and Outstand Little Miss Pageant will be held in the Minnie Evans Art Center, at Ashley High School, and tickets will be available at the door.
