Brion Capo resigned from his job with Wilmington after being convicted of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl.
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - A City of Wilmington employee resigned from his job Thursday after being convicted of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl.
Brion Capo was the city's urban arborist. He was arrested last summer by US Marshals after being indicted for child sex abuse in Mobile County, Alabama. Capo was scheduled to go to trial for sodomy and first degree sex abuse next week, but ended up taking a plea deal before the trial.
Under the terms of the plea bargain, the sodomy charge was dropped, and the first degree sex charge was reduced to second degree sex abuse.
Capo was accused of sexually abusing a female relative over the course of 7 years. Although she was 7 years old at the time the abuse allegedly started, prosecutors say Capo only pleaded guilty to abusing her when she was 12, which is a less serious crime. He was sentenced to a one year suspended prison sentence.
Prosecutors say Capo is now a registered sex offender in Alabama, and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office says he will be added to the North Carolina sex offender registry Thursday.
