WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – It may be the start of a new year, but detectives aren't forgetting old faces or cases. Officers with the Wilmington Police Department continue to investigate three unsolved murders – some of which are almost two years old.
Three may not seem like a huge number, but to law enforcement and the families each passing day means passed opportunities to crack the case.
"Weather will erode a crime scene, memories will fade, people move, people pass away, witnesses die," said Detective Kevin Smith who says evidence is everything. "It's so important to get as much information as you can and try to gather that evidence or those clues quickly."
Anyone with information about the following cases is asked to call the Wilmington Police Department at 910-343-3600, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-531-9845. Information also may be submitted anonymously through Text-A-Tip. Enter Tip708 and the message; send to CRIMES (274637).
"It may be that one crucial piece of information that we're missing that somebody saw or heard or knew about and they just don't think it's important," said Smith.
Ann Ashe found Tony Leon Harris, Jr. was found lying on the front porch of her home on North Fifth Avenue June 30, 2011 fighting for his life. She was hopeful he'd survive because Harris was talking when she first found him.
Authorities, however, said he had been shot and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Harris, who was known as TJ, was just 16 years old.
A relative of the family told WECT in 2011 the shooting was likely gang related, but no arrests have yet been made.
Detectives are still searching for answers in the murder of Carol Ann Johnson, who was killed in her home on a holiday. Johnson was found dead on her kitchen floor at her home on Pine Valley Drive July 4, 2011. A bathrobe soaked in blood lay at her feet.
According to the official report from the state's Chief Medical Examiner, Johnson died of blood loss from multiple stab wounds. An autopsy revealed a total of nine stab wounds to the neck, back, and chest. Defense wounds were also present on both hands and forearms. In total, Johnson was stabbed four times in the chest, four times in the neck, and once in the back.
Johnson's fiancé, Christopher Munn, told police he returned home from work around 3:00 a.m. on July 4 and found her body.
According to a search warrant, Clifton Sykes suffered one gunshot wound the chest December 3, 2012. Authorities say he and his girlfriend Mimi Mercedez Wyndahm were bound by Duct tape as they were robbed in a home on North Eighth Street.
The search warrant states the intruders took items such as watches, a cell phone and gun magazines that night.
The victim said the intruders were young men in their late teens or early 20s. They were wearing dark clothing and bandanas.
