NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Surprising numbers from New Hanover County on New Year's Eve. The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office says only six people were jailed for DWI's in the county and within the city of Wilmington.
A sheriff's spokesman says the number is surprising, but drinking and driving is still a problem and needs to be taken seriously.
"That's a good thing," said Sgt. Brewer. "That's a low number. On any given night you could have 10 - 15, so that was a good thing. It just goes to show you what can happen if there's a lot of good publicity to not drink and drive over New Year's. We just need to roll that over and make sure there is not drinking and driving on any night."
Even though New Hanover is the second smallest county in the state, it is number four in alcohol sales and has a large percentage of DWI arrests every year.
