Commissioner Berger talks with the County Manager during a meeting.NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A local filmmaker wants to tell the story of New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger with a documentary focused on the elected official.
Robert Cummins, who has worked out of Wilmington for the past six years, sent Berger an email with the proposition. Cummins said Monday afternoon that it's a legitimate request.
"I'd want to be objective about it," he said.
Cummins has not heard from Berger at the time of this report. The filmmaker said he's interested in creative control of the project, but would give distribution and residual rights to Berger.
"He has an interesting story to tell," said Cummins.
Berger's response to a comment about the documentary was not receptive to the idea.
In a text message, he wrote "Nobody cares about my boring life. So unless it'd create a significant number of jobs for people in the film industry I plan to focus on issues that matter…."
Cummins' most recent work has gained international attention. One Step at a Time was named a semi-finalist and even won an Audience Favorite award at the Focus Forward Films competition.
The recognition resulted in an invitation for Cummins to attend the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
A timeline of Berger's happenings can be found here.
