WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The holidays are not over yet, meaning there will be more drivers under the influence will be on the roads. To help curb this dangerous problem, local law enforcement is cracking down in a new way. This weekend officers kicked off their new plan for safety on the roads with a traffic tactic referred to as, saturation patrol.
Saturation patrol is when police spread out to for a city-wide operation with the goal of targeting impaired drivers on the roads. Officers say they want to keep the roads safe by enforcing laws in many areas opposed to just one check point location or patrol area, therefore making a bigger impact throughout the city.
Wilmington Police has joined forces with the New Hanover and Brunswick County Sheriffs offices as well as the North Carolina Highway Patrol in the effort to crack down on drunk driving.
The Department of Health and Human Services will let officers use their "Booze it and Lose it" bus, allowing them to do multiple sobriety tests at once.
