BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Detectives with the Bladen County Sheriff's Office are investigating a father/son shooting on Christmas Eve.
According to an incident report, authorities believe Herbert Paul Weissinger, of Elizabethtown, is responsible for the shooting. Authorities said Weissinger is a retired Highway Patrol officer. He joined the Patrol in 1980 and retired at the rank of lieutenant in 2007, according to NC State Highway Patrol.
Weissinger is accused of shooting Thomas Daughety Jr, 42, in the stomach and his father, 64, in the hand.
The Bladen County Sheriff's Office said the two men were shot after a dispute over possible trespassing near Beards Chapel Loop Road.
Daughety, Jr. is still in the hospital. Investigators have not been able to talk to him because of his condition after surgery. They hope to speak with him in the next few days.
The State Bureau of Investigation is working with the sheriff's office to investigate the crime.
The incident report shows detectives seized a 2008 and 2007 Chevy Silverado and also a 1998 Jeep Wrangler.
