WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Fire fighters responded to a call at the 7800 block of Bonaventure Drive in northern New Hanover County Wednesday morning.
A lightning strike sparked the flames at about 7 am, according to Deputy Fire Marshall Tom Sosebee. He said a neighbor called 911 after seeing heavy smoke nearly two hours later.
No on was hurt, because the family living in the house was away for the holidays, according to Sosebee. Fire crews contained the fire, but not before it caused extensive damage.
"There was a lot of structural damage," said Sosebee.
The deputy fire marshall said it was too soon to put a price on the damage, and that it is up to the insurance company to determine if it is a total loss.
Firefighters shut down nearby Bayfield Drive due to the fire in the Marsh Oak neighborhood.
