WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington Police Department Captain Jim Varrone cooked a Christmas meal for officers working Christmas day and night.
It's a gesture he feels is necessary on a day like this.
"Years ago I remember there was a senior officer on the first platoon I came on, I was working the midnight shift on Christmas night and he'd ask me to come to his car and move all these containers, so I asked 'What's going on?' and he said 'we're having a party'," said Captain Varrone. "There was all this food he had cooked and I never forgot that and I thought, I wanted to do the same thing."
Officers strolled through, dining on ham, mashed potatoes, and sweet potatoes. For desert there was pecan pie, brownies, and cookies.
"I want to let the folks know, those who certainly work for me and all those who have to work the holiday to know that I appreciate the sacrifice that they are making and having to come through and protect the public," said Captain Varrone. "I appreciate that and I just want to say thanks."
