NAVASSA, NC (WECT) -Council members voted to start looking for a new police chief Thursday night, according to Navassa Town Council Jerry Merrick.
Merrick says the decision comes after the town was unable to reach an agreement with the Brunswick County Sheriff's Office. Merrick voted against looking for a new chief, because he does not believe citizens and some council members have been involved in the process regarding the future of the police department.
Merrick says the town has not had a police chief in months. The last time they had a chief was when they had a contract with the chief of Northwest.
According to Merrick, there are currently 2 police officers working for the town, but they're on workman's comp.
