End of the World? UNCW professor says 'no'

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - There have been movies and songs, all calling for the end of the world in 2012. However is it really over? People WECT talked to in downtown Wilmington said they don't think so, and the experts agree.

Scott Simmons P.h. D.,  is an Associate Professor of Archaeology at UNCW. He's been traveling to Mayan ruins for more than two decades and says the Mayans did mark the date December 21, 2012 more than a millennium ago.

"All of the calendars were supposed to align or correspond with one another on December 21st 2012. That's why it's so important," said Simmons. However, he believes it didn't mean the end of the world, just the end of a more than 5,000 year cycle.

"The idea is that we are at the end of a great cycle - but if all goes according to plan than we will start a new cycle," said Simmons. "Yeah, we may have apocalypse parties but then on the 22nd we will have earth renewal parties."

He says all the hype isn't for nothing.

"This is, I think, a misconception about what people believe in terms of time and cycle," said Simmons. "What it did do is shed light on interesting fascinating group of people."

Whether the world is ending or not, the Red Cross is using it as an opportunity to remind people to have disaster plans. They suggest that families, start a kit, make a plan and be informed.
