NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – For the eighth straight year, two counties in our area are leading the state in DWI arrests.
According to the NC Highway Patrol, New Hanover and Brunswick counties have led the state in DWI arrests since 2005.
"In the last few years I've actually seen that we're just consistently heavy with regard to traffic and I think the larger number of people you have the more opportunity that presents itself for these incidents," said First Sgt. Pope.
In 2012, troopers arrested 1,569 people for DWI. These offenses include people who are under the influence of alcohol, prescription drugs and any other substance that may affect your driving capabilities.
"What we're looking to do is anything to save a life," said Pope. "We like to concentrate on DWI's and speeding and those issues because those things are issues that results in death."
Troopers said we have a lot going on in our area. The university, beaches and downtown district all draw a lot of people in New Hanover County. In Brunswick County, the large amount of beaches brings in a lot of tourists as well.
