WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A local girl got her only wish on her Christmas list a little early this year.
James Robertson returned from Afghanistan Thursday morning and went straight to his daughter's school. Robertson is a first class construction electrician in the US Navy and got his leave orders approved to come home for the holidays this year.
After serving our country for more than ten years and missing a handful of Christmases, he wanted to make this one a little more special with a surprise.
In a matter of seconds, Robertson turned a typical day at Trask Middle School into what many would think was Christmas morning.
"Honey, I'm home," he said to his daughter Michelle and son James.
After eight months of separation, the Robertson family was reunited.
Not only were friends and family in tears, but also faculty and the students in the 6th grade classroom.
Robertson said he was excited and nervous for the surprise.
"Unfortunately the weather in Afghanistan is not very cooperative so it's possible to have grounded aircraft so I didn't want to raise her hopes and have them dashed because we got a freak snowstorm," he said.
Robertson is home for two weeks before he will have to return to Afghanistan. He said he hopes to come home for good around March.
