
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -Gov. Bev Perdue signed a proclamation Thursday declaring Friday, Dec. 21 as a "Day of Mourning," encouraging residents to participate in a statewide moment of silence at 9:30 a.m., according to a news release.
"Our thoughts and hearts continue to be with the families of the victims of this senseless act of violence in Newtown, Conn.," said Gov. Perdue. "Bob [Perdue's husband] and I are deeply shocked and heartbroken over this tragic loss of life. Our prayers are with all the families of the children, teachers and administrators."
According to the news release, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy sent letters to governors across the nation requesting each state to participate in the "Day of Mourning."
