New Hanover County Commissioners smartly avoided a potential mistake last week. And I'd like to tell you why I think that. Commissioners chose to appoint Thomas Wolfe instead of Derrick Hickey to fill the vacant seat on the county commission. I think that was a good move.
And how did Dr. Hickey respond? He told our reporter and I quote, "Once again, what we've gone ahead and done is we've chosen an old white guy." His words, not mine.
Think about that comment for a moment. That's from a person who is already supposed to be a leader in our community as Dr. Hickey is currently a member of the New Hanover County Board of Education.
That statement comes after voters, Republican and Democrat, chose to vote in an African American man and a Caucasian woman to fill two of the three open commission seats.
To use such inflammatory language when referring to Mr. Wolfe, who, from all I've learned, is more than qualified for the position, should not go unnoticed by the voters.
Sounds like sour grapes to me. And I hope with the benefit of time, Dr. Hickey will understand just how foolish that statement was. Regardless, for me anyway, he confirms that last week's vote to appoint Thomas Wolfe was the right decision.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
