NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A simple suggestion for spare change could generate thousands of dollars for alcohol abuse rehabilitation.
The holiday season results in a stockpile of empty liquor boxes in local ABC stores. Though they're free to anyone who takes them, New Hanover County's ABC board hopes people will donate a quarter for every box.
If only half of the boxes are accompanied with a quarter, CEO Dan Sykes said roughly $15,000 would be collected.
"We certainly don't want to discourage anyone from taking the boxes," he said. "We just thought we'd make a suggestion."
The money is passed along to a local organization that assists with people recovering from alcohol abuse.
Donation boxes are installed in every ABC store in New Hanover County.
