Collecting pillow pets to comfort Sandy Hook Elementary survivors

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A local family in Pender County is doing a "Pillow Pets" drive. The drive will collect pillow pets and send them to every student at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Shemekka Coleman sat down with her son Lomari, 8, and asked him how he would want to help the survivors. He recommended nap time and a pillow pet. It would give the students a moment to ease their nerves whenever they felt sad.

"We found the comfort of a stuffed animal and the ability to maybe lay your head down and have a moment," said Coleman. "We thought of the pillow pet and thought it would be a really good project."

The family will collect as many pillow pets, cookie detective books, and stuffed animals to drive up to Connecticut by the first of the year.

"Locally, we want to have a resource for Pender County and New Hanover County school counselors to have a supply of pillow pets for grief and comfort for anyone that maybe having a really hard time," said Coleman.

The Coleman family is collecting at The Well CDC - 14840 US HWY 17 N, Hampstead, NC 28443.
