WILMINGTON, NC - (WECT) - It was supposed to be a day of fun for the whole family, but when the pink fire truck pulled in only Chishel Segura's two children jumped out. The 39-year-old mother is terminally ill and fighting cancer. The American Cancer Society nominated her to get a visit from the Experience Genie, and have a genie grant her a day of dreams. However, the Friday, the day it was supposed to happen, Chishel was had to go to the hospital.
"She thought it would be a good idea for us to surprise the kids and give them a dream day," said Joshua Dawson, who dresses up as the Genie.
"She pushes her emotion on the back burner for them," said her friend, Mildred Bethea. "I know she can exchange her sadness for their happiness". As part of their day of dreams, the kids were checked into a hotel at Wrightsville Beach and taken to the Independence Mall to meet Santa and go on a shopping spree.
"They are having fun," said Chishel's brother, Christian. "They are away - and not thinking about how their mother is going through so much."
"They are getting what she wanted them to get," said Bethea. "That's bigger than anything."
