Derrick Hickey is the GOP choice to fill an open seat on NH County Board of Commissioners
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – The New Hanover County Republican Party Executive
Committee has selected Dr. Derrick Hickey to fill the empty seat on the New
Hanover County Board of Commissioners.
Hickey is currently a member of the New Hanover County School Board. He
ran for one of three open seats on the Board of Commissioners in November, but
finished fourth in the voting.
Hickey and Thomas Wolfe were nominated at a GOP meeting Thursday night.
Hickey received more votes than Wolfe, who is the chairman of the ABC Board.
Hickey's nomination is not official. He must be approved by the current
commissioners. That issue will be discussed at a special meeting on Friday at
1:00pm. Since there are four current commissioners, we are told Hickey must
receive at least three votes.
The open seat on the Board of Commissioners came up when Rick Catlin
resigned earlier this month. Catlin was elected to serve as a Representative
from District 20 in the General Assembly.
