The trend began this season at Dunkin Donuts about a month ago – but only at the drive thru. According to the manager, paying it backwards has not yet happened at the inside counter.
Basically, the person at the front of the line offers to pay for the order in the car behind them. Employees say there are a few scrooges in the bunch, but most people are happy to give.
The manager of Dunkin Donuts said the same trend happened last year around this time and has spread to other restaurants in the area.
Customers at the Chick-fil-A near Independence Mall were also "paying it backward" Wednesday afternoon.
