CALABASH, NC (WECT) – The mayor in Calabash, Mary Louise Knight, was stripped of all her duties during the commissioners meeting Tuesday night.
According to the mayor pro tem, commissioners voted 3-2 to remove Knight's powers. Mayor pro tem Emily DiStasio said no one really knows what that exactly means at this time.
DiStasio said she and Commissioner Daria Buccilli were the two commissioner that voted against stripping the mayor of her duties.
This move comes after Knight spent town money to have the floor removed and replaced in her office. A receipt shows that she paid more than $1,000 dollars of the town's money to remove carpet and install laminate flooring.
DiStasio said that project should have gone out for a bid.
Town ordinances require town leaders to submit written requests when over a certain amount of money. Knight admitted she violated the purchasing ordinance.
Knight told WECT.com that the town is not carrying out town hall renovations like they should.
She said the town recently moved her office in town hall. Turns out the new office had moldy carpet and needed to be removed. Knight said she went to the town administrator to let him know the carpet to be removed. He told WECT.com that Knight did come to him with her request but did not mention she would be replacing it with laminate.
Knight also said furniture had been sitting in the front entrance of town hall and needed to be assembled in her office, but she wanted the floor to be replaced before putting any of the furniture into the room.
According to the Calabash Town Ordinances, the mayor is responsible for being the chief executive officer of the town. Among other things, the mayor is responsible for staying informed to the town's business, signing contracts, appointing committees, and represent the town at ceremonies.
Right now, the mayor is only allowed to facilitate meetings and public events.
WECT.com reached out to commissioners for a comment, but they refused to say anything on the issue.
