Two bank accounts have been created to help benefit Zoey Belcher, the infant daughter of Jovan Belcher and Kasandra Perkins.
The Kansas City Chiefs announced Friday the formation of the Zoey Michelle Belcher Irrevocable Trust. Perkins' family in conjunction with Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles and wife Whitney announced a second banking account to benefit Zoey.
"We appreciate all of the heartfelt concern and sincere thoughtfulness we have received during this surreal time," according to a statement issued on behalf of the Perkins and Charles families. "We would especially like to thank the NFL Players Association for their generosity and kindness. Kasandra will be laid to rest at the end of the week in a private ceremony with family and friends in Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to benefit her daughter, Zoey."
The Perkins said their fund was set up at Bank of America and is account 586031390355.
Belcher, starting linebacker for the Chiefs, fatally shot Perkins during an argument last Saturday morning. He then sped to Arrowhead Stadium where he thanked General Manager Scott Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel for their support before fatally shooting himself. Before committing suicide, Belcher asked Pioli for him and Chiefs owner Clark Hunt to take care of Zoey.
Hunt and his family attended both Belcher and Perkins' funerals this week. He publicly pledged to ensure a fund was set up for Zoey's behalf.
The Hunt family as well as Chiefs players, coaches and staff have made contributions to set up the Irrevocable Trust. UMB will act as corporate trustee and work in conjunction with Zoey's legal guardian to ensure that the money is being used for benefit.
Belcher's mother was given temporary care of Zoey, but a permanent guardian apparently has not been determined.
"Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families and everyone affected by the heartbreaking events of last Saturday," Hunt said in a statement Friday. "As we continue to struggle with the emotional pain from the tragedy, the Chiefs family is focused on helping 3-month-old Zoey Michelle Belcher as she faces the challenge of growing up without the support of her parents. Zoey will always be a part of the Chiefs family, and we hope that this trust will help to ensure she has the resources necessary as she grows up."
This is in addition to the financial benefits she will receive from the NFL as her father's beneficiary.
Those wishing to contribute to the trust may make donations to the Zoey Belcher Trust, UMB Bank - Attention: Trust Division, P.O. Box 419226, Kansas City, MO 64179. Checks should be made payable to UMB Bank, N.A. Trustee of the Zoey Michelle Belcher Irrevocable Trust.
In their statement, the Perkins family took issues with the rumors and speculation about the death of the woman they called "Kasi."
"Kasandra turned twenty-two on October 14th this year. Her life was just beginning when it was taken so unexpectedly last week. There has been a disheartening amount of rumors and speculation surrounding the tragic loss of our Kasi. No one will ever truly know why this happened nor is there anything to be said that could justify or ease our pain. We miss her deeply and would like to shed light on the person she really was," according to the statement.
"Kasandra will be remembered as our fun-loving, outgoing "Kasi". Always full of laughter, kindness, optimism and inspiration. She was energetic, happy and loved life. She could find the good in any person or situation. Kasandra was loyal, honest and trusting. Overall, she was dedicated to starting her new family and beyond excited about being a mother to her sweet baby. We will raise Baby Zoey in the knowledge of the love from which she was born. Please keep us in prayer as God will be our strength."
