A stick of dynamite that washed ashore on a Harbor Island beach late Thursday afternoon has been destroyed.
Around 4 p.m., sheriff's deputies responded to Harbor Island after a beachgoer reported that he found a stick of dynamite on the shore. Area residents were alerted and authorities secured the area.
Beaufort Co. Bomb Squad members responded and detonated the explosive in place without incident. There was no damage and no one was injured. Authorities do not know where the dynamite may have originated.
The area was back open to residents and visitors around 6:45 p.m.
