Thalian Association Children's Theater presents 'The Hobbit' - WECT, weather & sports Wilmington, NC

Before the big movie opens, local kids tell the epic tale

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Just in time for the premiere of a blockbuster movie, some local kids are getting in on the action.

The prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, opens in theaters December 14 but before that, Thalian Association Children's Theater is performing its own version.

The epic story written by J.R.R. Tolkien centers around Bilbo Baggins, a home-loving hobbit who sets out on a great adventure to win a share of an enormous treasure guarded by a dragon.

Gandalf the Wizard and several dwarves are part of his troupe, and of course they meet elves and other obstacles along the way. It's a trip Bilbo didn't want to take at first.

"They trick him into going," said actor Aidan Malone. "He doesn't like it at all, and he ends up kind of enjoying it slowly and kind of secretly liking it, but he hides that. In the end he enjoys it but wants to go back home."

The Hobbit is a show that kind of steps out of the norm for TACT.

"Usually we do musicals here," said Aidan. "It's great. It's a totally different setting. It has great costumes. The lighting's amazing, and it's just such a great play and it's a really good experience to come see it."
