WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Police are investigating a shooting that happened in the 1200 block of South 15th Street Monday night.
According to police, a man was shot in the head, but was alert and walking around. They said the shooting took place between Kidder and Marstellar Streets.
A witness called 911 and also told operators that the victim was shot in the head.
"He was beating on my door, I didn't hear no gunshots," said the caller.
The caller said Tuesday that a man walked up to her and asked for directions. She had just moved to the area so she told the man to ask Lee Remsnyder.
Police say the victim was approached by the man in his parking lot. They say he then went inside his business and moments later the shooting took place.
During that 911 call, a witness told the operator that authorities passed the victim on Marstellar.
"Come on," the witness said, "he'll be driving himself to the hospital. This is crazy."
It took about 10 minutes for emergency crews to arrive on the scene. Emergency Director Warren Lee is unsure why it took so long.
Kevin Smith with the Wilmington Police Department said it's difficult to find an address when you're dealing with A and B addresses.
Apparently there is more than one address listed around the plot of land.
The Wilmington Police Department said the shooting took place on a parking lot of the property. The lot has an address of 1202.5 S. 15th St. The 911 caller gave an address of 1202 S. 15th St.
WECT.com is told there is a home, trailer, business and parking lot on the land. According to the woman who called 911, Remsnyder used to own a business on the land.
A woman who lives in the house on the corner said she's been living there for more than 60 years and occasionally has to call police to the area.
She said the entire plot of land is confusing and she said she always makes sure to tell law enforcement her house is on the corner.
She also told WECT.com that the parking lot where Remsnyder was shot was given a new address by Wilmington city leaders a few years ago. She said that she receives mail to both 1202.5 S. 15th Street as well as the address they gave her which is in the 1400's on Marstellar Street.
When EMS arrived on scene they took the victim to the hospital. According to police, the 58-year-old victim was released from the hospital Monday night after being treated for a gunshot wound to the head.
Police have not yet identified or arrested an accused shooter in this case.
Wilmington Police detectives suggest residents make sure you can see addresses from the street. They also suggest making sure your neighbors have a good description available at all times.
They said having these descriptions available could mean the difference between life and death.
