After months of looking for a new police chief, city leaders in Boiling Spring Lakes have hired a new chief.BOILING SPRING LAKES, NC (WECT) - The city of Boiling Spring Lakes has hired a new police chief.
After weeks of interviewing candidates, city leaders have hired Brad Shirley to serve as their newest chief of police.
Shirley will start in Boiling Spring Lakes on Jan. 22, 2013.
Shirley is currently working as a lieutenant with the Graham Police Department in Graham, NC. He was hired in March 1999 by the police department and has worked his way up the ranks from patrol officer to lieutenant in Graham.
According to the BSL city manager, Shirley will be making $60,000 a year.
"We believe Shirley was the best candidate for this position," said BSL manager Jeff Repp.
Shirley replaces former police chief Emmett Ballree after the city fired him from his position. Two investigations were launched into Ballree. One was by the SBI and another was an internal investigation by the city. City leaders said Ballree was abusing his powers as chief and was later fired.
Lt. Rick Spencer has been serving as interim police chief with the department and will continue to do so until Shirley assumes his position in January, according to Repp.
