WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Three drivers have been charged in connection to illegal street racing following two car crashes that took place Friday night.

The lead car driven was by Joshua Cramer, who is currently in critical but stable condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Cramer is charged with DWI, according to Lt. Fanta with the WPD.

Cramer and two other drivers raced on 17th Street Friday until he crashed near the intersection of Independence Boulevard.

Cramer lost control and slammed into a tree so hard that the engine ripped out of his car, and preliminary estimates suggest that the three drivers were traveling at high speeds of up to 100 mph.

Other drivers involved are William Rogers and Nicholas Stentiford.

Rogers lost control of his car as well when he noticed Cramer's accident, causing him, too to crash, though he did not suffer serious injuries.

An investigation led officers to Stentiford, who kept driving past the scene of both crashes.

A better understanding of what happened will be available after traffic officers reconstruct the accident.

All three are charged with spontaneous speed competition and reckless driving.
