WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Detectives with the Wilmington Police Department Juvenile Justice Team arrested a former middle school teacher who is accused of having indecent liberties with a child.

Police say April Schaefer, 26, was arrested and charged Thursday night with the following:

  • disseminate obscene material to minor
  • indecent liberties with child
  • felony indecent liberties with student
  • contributing to the delinquency/neglect of a juvenile

Schaefer worked at Roland Grise Middle School from 2010-2011, according to the New Hanover County School system. Authorities say that's when she allegedly met the 13-year-old victim.

A spokesperson for NHC Schools said "her employment was time certain for one year. Her contract was non-renewable."

"There will be more charges forthcoming against the suspect as this investigation is still unfolding," said Sgt Tom Tillmon, the WPD Juvenile Justice Team Supervisor.
