HAMPSTEAD, NC (WECT) - Topsail softball coach Jeff Gainey stepped down from his position according to athletic director Benjamin Horne.

"He has two kids of his own that are now involved in athletics, coaching two major programs didn't give him a lot of time." Horne said Thursday afternoon.

Gainey will stay on as the head coach of the boys basketball team.

"He just had a lot on his plate and he chose to stay with basketball."

Horne has conducted four interviews and hopes to have a new coach in place by next week.

Topsail finished the 2012 season with a 26-1 overall record and the Lady Pirates climbed as high as No. 6 in the country, according to maxpreps.com's national rankings.  Topsail's lone loss was a 4-3 decision to Beddingfield in the third round of the Class 2A playoffs.
