CHEROKEE COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -
Cherokee County sheriff's deputies have arrested three people for stealing railroad spikes.
While looking for poachers on County Road 4807, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Brian Bearden observed three people tugging a homemade cart down the railroad tracks.
Cherokee County deputies were called to assist. When authorities tried to question the group, two of them fled the scene on foot. Authorities say arrested one suspect at the scene, and that suspect confessed to stealing railroad spikes and hooks.
That suspect led authorities to the other two suspects in the 2900 Block of Hwy-177 in the Mixon Community where deputies arrested them.
Officials say the three suspects built the cart to roll on the railroad and store their stolen goods. Authorities recovered 260 spikes, 30 hooks and the cart dumped in the woods.
Lance Adams of Troup, 22, Dustin Massey, 24, of Mixon, and Briana Hale, 18, of Troup were arrested and charged with organized criminal activity and interference with railroad property.
Hale had previously been arrested for a robbery in Jacksonville.
Railroad authorities will inspect the tracks to make sure there are no safety issues.
